Recent Projects
Feed Pump IoT monitoring system | Pump monitoring system using STM32WB55 (Bluetooth) and xDot LoRa radio transmitter. Data was regularly sampled, stored, and periodically sent to Azure via a LoRa connection to a LoRa Gateway (Multitech LoRa to Cellular bridge) |
Engineering Data Logger | IoT Data logger for a well-known vacuum cleaner company to allow them to evaluate various sensor technologies. Used STM32 as the main processor with ESP32-C3 for the WiFi/Azure link |
Wireless Detonation Device | Creating a wireless detonator device for military/professional use. Using STM32 and XBee radio in transmitter, and XBee only in receivers. Used microPython on the XBee receiver modules and AT Command mode on the transmitters |
SmartHome Hub | A Raspberry PI CM3+ based solution for a client. Responsible for the hardware selection and development of the custom Linux distribution (using Yocto) and RF Test software |
IoT Wireless power line monitoring | A proof-of-concept solution that Involved taking environmental sensor data, 4K camera image, ultrasonic and RF emissions sensor data at regular intervals. Data was stored locally and transmitted via LoRa to a cellular gateway for eventual upload to a Cloud Based analytics package. Used a BeagleBone Black Industrial for the Ultrasonic (PRU-ICSS), data formatting, camera image and SD card storage. Used a PyCom WiPy for small sensor readings, GPS time/positional information and low power management and the MultiTech mDot for LoRa communications |
Automotive CANbus Interface | Developed an automotive CANbus analyser and product updater that connects over USB and BLE (using Microchip dsPIC30F6012A and BM71 Bluetooth Module). Unit replaced an earlier USB only version that I also developed. Was responsible for selecting the board level processor, Bluetooth module and external memory. Developed a secure bootloader and the main application code as well as supporting PC based applications. Mobile app development was handled by a third-party vendor using the API that I developed |
GPS GeoFencing Product | An automotive GPS Geofencing product, using the Microchip PIC18F46K22. This device tracked the location of a vehicle within a geofenced area and gave alerts or actively controlled vehicle speed when crossing geofence boundaries. Developed the bootloader and skeleton demonstration application to my client who then wrote the main application. Also wrote a PC Tray application to connect to the device and download new firmware and geofences when connected to the PC. |
Wireless Battery Monitor Router/Access Point | Implemented wireless monitoring of intelligent battery monitors (fork lift truck). Involved wireless scanning and downloading of data over a proprietary wireless link, implementation of web-based configuration management pages, firmware update and secure data upload to an external FTP site using TI AM335x processor (aka Beaglebone) |
School Science Lab Controller | Using PIC24HJ256, updated existing design to add an SDHC interface, EEPROM driver/abstraction layer and implement a bootloader/firmware update mechanism |
